Lima, August 2023.- In Peru, thousands of homes are built without using the proper construction processes, putting the families in those homes at risk. According to data from the Peruvian Association of Construction Companies (CAPECO), 80% of housing in Peru is built informally; in other words, approximately 200,000 homes would be in imminent danger, especially considering that Peru is highly prone to earthquakes.
Therefore, being committed to education, UNACEM and its brand Cemento Sol, has launched ‘Protecting Sol’s Dreams’, the first animated short film that seeks to raise awareness among children about the importance of building safely. Sol Segura, a 12 year old girl whose voice is provided by the outstanding Andino Pop singer Milena Warthon, shows us the importance of prevention and planning when she decides to build a dog shelter following “the 8 steps for safe construction”.
Gabriel Barrio, UNACEM’s Commercial Manager, pointed out that “future generations are the foundation of our country and they will build our future. It is extremely important, therefore, that we continue to support initiatives that raise awareness among young people, preparing them for the challenges that exist in the country and ensuring that they understand the importance of good construction”.
Starting July 7, the short film, which is 12 minutes long and suitable for the whole family, will be screened in 6 traveling cinemas in different neighborhoods in UNACEM’s areas of influence. Anyone interested in seeing this short film on one of the dates at the traveling cinemas can register on the website https://www.cementosol.com.pe/ . Starting July 15, the short film will also be available on Cemento Sol’s website and will be freely accessible to all.
It should be noted that UNACEM and Cemento Sol are working continually to raise awareness of the importance of safe construction through various campaigns aimed at children, young people and adults. In 2021 they launched ‘Protect what you build’ and ‘The 8 steps of safe construction’, two initiatives that encourage good construction practices through training and talks on the importance of ensuring safety in Peruvian homes.
